Timber Picnic Tables for Cafes

JJ Timber Design standard picnic table with coffee setup timber picnic tables for cafes patio seating

Here at JJ Timber Design, our family-run team has handcrafted timber picnic tables for cafes, breweries, holiday parks, schools and community venues across Australia.

What started in our backyard in Logan Village with just one table has grown into a busy workshop in Jimboomba, South East Queensland.

We proudly employ three local legends who share our passion for quality, care, and craftsmanship. Every table ships fully assembled and ready to use, though if your venue has a tight space or balcony to navigate, we also offer simple, easy-to-assemble flatpack options.

Outdoor seating has become part of the experience for most venues. Customers choosing where to have their morning coffee or long lunch are factoring in the space, not just the menu. Timber picnic tables for cafes create the kind of relaxed, social atmosphere that keeps people sitting longer.

Commercial use is different from backyard use. Tables get dragged, leaned on, wiped down constantly, and exposed to sun, rain and high turnover. If they are not built properly, they loosen quickly.

We build in hardwood and exterior-grade treated pine with galvanised bolts and screws. That combination handles the daily stress of commercial use without loosening or warping. Browse our commercial timber picnic tables to see what we build for hospitality venues.

Why timber picnic tables work well for cafes

Timber picnic tables for cafes are not just a styling choice. They are a long-term operational decision for venues that need reliable commercial outdoor seating that will not loosen, flex or need replacing every season.

There is nothing wrong with a typical cafe table, and in fact, mixing layouts often works well. But timber picnic tables offer something different. They:

  • Encourage shared seating
  • Increase capacity without crowding
  • Create a more relaxed outdoor dining feel
  • Anchor the space visually

An outdoor cafe table set usually consists of lightweight tables and chairs, which works in some venues. But in high-traffic environments, constant movement becomes a problem. A solid timber build removes that issue, they are heavier, stable, and designed to stay put.

Built for Commercial Conditions, Not Just Outdoor Use

A commercial cafe table needs to handle more than weather. It gets moved daily, wiped down after every sitting, loaded with the weight of full groups, and left outside through every season. Most outdoor furniture sold online is not built for that.

We build our commercial tables from hardwood and exterior-grade treated pine, which is rated for permanent outdoor exposure. It does not rot, it does not split the way untreated timber can, and it holds fixings properly under repeated stress.

Australia’s UV exposure levels are among the highest in the world. Timber that is not finished and spec’d correctly for outdoor use shows it within a season.

Our tables are oiled with a penetrating outdoor finish that protects the surface and can be re-oiled without stripping or sanding back.

Our standard solid timber picnic table is the most common choice for cafes needing strength, stability and long-term performance. If your current cafe table setup needs tightening every few months, that is a build issue, not bad luck.

When a picnic table works better than an outdoor cafe table set

Individual outdoor cafe tables work well for couples and smaller seating zones. But if your cafe regularly hosts families, weekend brunch crowds or groups that tend to push tables together, timber picnic tables often outperform a standard outdoor cafe table set.

Longer runs improve flow, staff reset faster, and guests feel less boxed in. Visually, it feels intentional, not pieced together.

Sizing guide for cafe layouts

Before selecting any cafe table layout, assess how customers move. Do you offer table service or counter collection? Are prams common? Do groups regularly push tables together?

When small cafe tables are constantly being rearranged, the layout is fighting your space. Solid timber picnic tables reduce that friction. As a general guide:

  • 1500mm tables seat six comfortably
  • 1800mm tables suit families and small groups
  • 2100mm tables work well in high-traffic venues

Sizing should support movement, not restrict it.

Timber spec and finish options

We build cafe tables in two main specs depending on the venue’s preference and budget.

Hardwood is denser and harder wearing. It handles load well and ages with a natural silver-grey patina if left unoiled. We recommend it for venues with permanent covered outdoor areas or where appearance is a priority.

Exterior-grade treated pine is our most common commercial spec. It is rated for permanent outdoor exposure, handles Brisbane’s humidity and Queensland sun without issue, and takes an oiled finish well. Re-oiling is straightforward and can be done without any specialist equipment.

Timber species are graded under national timber durability classifications. The spec we choose for each order reflects the exposure level and use case, not just what looks good on paper.

Both options use galvanised bolts and screws, which hold tension through seasonal movement and do not rust in coastal or high-humidity environments.

Operational advantages for busy cafes

From a staffing perspective, timber picnic tables simplify operations. Compared to multiple small cafe table setups, you get:

  • Faster resets
  • Fewer loose chairs
  • Cleaner lines
  • Less daily repositioning

In peak service periods, that efficiency matters. And because the build is solid, you are not constantly adjusting legs or tightening bolts.

A recent commercial delivery: Binna Burra Lodge

We often pinch ourselves at how lucky we are to deliver our handcrafted tables to some of the most beautiful places in Australia. Binna Burra Lodge, a heritage mountain resort in the Lamington National Park, is exactly that kind of place.

After Cyclone Jasper caused significant damage to the property, they came to us for outdoor seating as part of the rebuild. We were incredibly proud to load up the truck and deliver 18 of our picnic tables and 5 of our benches to the site. This was our second order from them.

The tables needed to handle the conditions of a working tourist venue at altitude: high rainfall, shade, heavy visitor use, and the kind of humidity that finishes off poorly built furniture quickly. We recommended our exterior-grade treated pine with an oiled finish, and they are still in use today.

If you are planning outdoor seating for a commercial venue, that context matters. The spec that works for a sheltered suburban cafe courtyard is not necessarily the right call for a coastal kiosk or a mountain resort. Whether you need 1 picnic table or 20, we are here to help and we work through that context with every venue before we build.

Fixed or moveable?

Some venues prefer fixed picnic tables for stability and security. Others prefer moveable builds to adjust layouts seasonally. If your current outdoor cafe table set is constantly shifting or being dragged, it may be time to upgrade to something designed for commercial use. The right build solves problems before they show up in customer reviews.

Maintenance without complication

Timber maintenance is straightforward:

  • Daily wipe down
  • Periodic re-oiling
  • Routine check of fixings

Most venues re-oil once or twice a year depending on exposure. In covered outdoor areas, once a year is usually enough. In full sun or coastal environments, twice is better. Our care and maintenance guide covers this in detail if you want a full breakdown.

A properly built outdoor cafe table does not require constant attention, and a solid timber picnic table typically outlasts multiple lightweight replacements.

Frequently asked questions

Are timber picnic tables better than standard cafe tables?

We get asked this a lot! For high-traffic venues and shared seating, absolutely. A solid timber picnic table is heavier and more stable than a standard cafe table and chair setup, which means less daily repositioning for your busy staff and fewer maintenance issues.

For smaller, more intimate seating zones, individual cafe tables still work well. Most venues end up using a mix to get the best of both worlds.

Can timber replace an outdoor cafe table set?

Yes, it sure can. Many cafes replace multiple smaller outdoor cafe tables with larger timber picnic tables to improve flow and seating efficiency.

A 1800mm or 2100mm table can seat the same number of guests as three or four individual setups, with less space lost to chair legs and table legs in between. It just makes the whole space feel more intentional and relaxed.

Are timber outdoor cafe tables weather resistant?

With the right timber spec and finish, yes. We build in hardwood and exterior-grade treated pine with a penetrating outdoor oil. Both are perfectly suited to permanent outdoor use in Australian conditions.

Living and working in South East Queensland, we know firsthand that properly maintained timber holds up well year-round without the rust or fading you get from metal or plastic alternatives.

Do timber picnic tables require more maintenance than metal cafe tables?

Not significantly. Daily cleaning is exactly the same. The main difference is a periodic re-oiling, which most venues do once or twice a year depending on sun and weather exposure.

The best part? There is no rust to manage, no paint to peel, and no powder coating to chip. For most venues, the maintenance load is actually lower than metal over the long term.

Can sizes be customised?

You bet! We can customise table length, height, timber type and finish to suit your venue layout. If you are fitting out a specific space or need to match existing outdoor furniture, just shoot us a message and we will work through all the options with you.
