We have put together a list of care and maintenance tips to help you look after your new timber tables, whether you have one of our picnic tables, outdoor dining tables, or a custom build.
Reapply oil every 3 months, or whenever the finish begins to appear dull or patchy.
If the surface feels rough, lightly sand with 120-grit sandpaper before reapplying oil. This is an estimate and is dependent on where the table is placed. If in full sun, every 3 months is recommended.
Water-Based Finish
These finishes sit on the surface, unlike penetrating oils. We recommend light sanding with 120-grit and re-staining or repainting every 6 months, or as needed to maintain protection and appearance. This is a rough estimate depending on placement of table.
Without UV protection, raw timber will naturally grey and may experience minor weathering. This is a natural part of the ageing process.
Hardwood Tables
Some hardwoods can leech natural tannins and oils—especially in the first few weeks and during heavy rain.
This may stain nearby tiles, concrete, or pavers. If this occurs:
Timber is a natural material—it shrinks and swells with temperature and humidity changes. You may notice small cracks (called “checking”). This is completely normal and usually stabilises as the timber adjusts to its new environment.
Your table may also need a bolt retighten during the first 12 months.
Use a 17mm socket and ratchet to do this as required.
Allow it to weather for 12 weeks to let the timber settle and lose it’s moisture. You can paint before but it may result in staining.
Then sand with 120-grit sandpaper before applying and coating it with paint.
