Delivering 61 childcare picnic tables across nine early learning centres in Brisbane was one of the larger childcare rollouts we have completed. Every table in this project was built by our team at the JJ Timber workshop in Jimboomba, South East Queensland, and then delivered directly to the centres that needed them.
As parents to our proud little apprentice Izzy and our two-year-old daughter, we know firsthand just how tough kids can be on furniture. Now multiply that by thirty kids in a childcare yard! Outdoor spaces in childcare centres get heavy daily use.
Snack time, craft activities, group learning and play sessions all happen outside. The furniture used in those spaces needs to be stable, safe and sized correctly for young children.
We loved working directly with nine centres to build kids picnic tables designed specifically for toddlers and preschool-aged children. Seeing a full truck loaded with kids tables heading out to multiple centres is one of those moments that reminds us exactly why we love doing this work.

All tables are built from treated pine with a penetrating outdoor oil finish.
Each centre needed slightly different configurations depending on yard layout, supervision zones and the age groups using the space. Shortly after installation, the coordinator at our Sunnybank centre sent us this wonderful message:
“The tables are great. Solid, and they fit 6 children comfortably. These are much better quality than the ones we ordered in the past.”
Feedback like that tells us the tables are doing exactly what they were built for.
The tables were delivered to centres across Brisbane and surrounding suburbs including Cannon Hill , Cleveland , Daisy Hill , Doolandella , Flagstone , Sunnybank , Richlands , Pallara , and Underwood.
Every location had a slightly different outdoor setup. Some centres needed toddler tables closer to play areas, while others required larger seating areas for preschool groups. Because everything is built locally, we were able to coordinate production and deliveries so each centre received their tables exactly when they needed them.
Centres consistently told us the same things when planning their outdoor spaces. They needed tables that stay stable when children climb on them , seat groups comfortably , hold up to daily outdoor use , and allow educators to supervise easily.
Outdoor areas are used throughout the day in early learning environments. Children eat, learn, play and socialise around these tables. Many centres also design their yards around ACECQA outdoor play space guidelines, which focus on safe and well-supervised environments.
Our table sizing works well within those spaces. When the seating is built properly and sized correctly, outdoor sessions run far more smoothly.
Childcare furniture needs to handle more than occasional use. Children climb on tables, lean on benches, and shift around constantly during play and group activities.
For this project, the kids picnic tables are built from treated pine, reinforced with heavy-duty bracing and galvanised bolts and screws so the frames stay stable even with constant use.
Each table seats up to six children comfortably, with heights designed specifically for toddler and preschool age groups. Each table is finished with a penetrating outdoor timber oil that protects the surface from Brisbane humidity, rainfall and regular cleaning.
