Kids Picnic Tables for Childcare Centres and Kindergartens

We have got two little ones at home. Izzy has been in the workshop since she could walk, and our youngest is two. So when a childcare centre gets in touch about outdoor furniture, I take it personally.

The tables we build for early learning settings are the same ones I would put in front of my own kids. Smooth edges, solid timber, no sharp joins, no wobbly legs. Built to handle the kind of daily use that would knock cheaper furniture around within a year.

We recently finished one of our bigger childcare jobs, delivering 61 kids picnic tables across nine Brisbane early learning centres. Every table came out of our Jimboomba workshop and was delivered directly to each site, assembled and ready to go. That project is where a lot of what is in this guide comes from.

What childcare centres actually need from outdoor furniture

Commercial kids furniture gets used hard. It is outside in all weather, wiped down with cleaning products every day, climbed on, leaned on, and generally treated the way only kids in groups can treat things.

Cheap furniture from a general retailer tends to show that within a year. Joins loosen. Surfaces roughen. Finishes peel. And then you are replacing it, which always costs more in the long run than buying something solid from the start.

The coordinator at one of the Sunnybank centres in our Brisbane project put it well after the tables arrived: “The tables are great. Solid, and they fit 6 children comfortably. These are much better quality than the ones we ordered in the past.” That is exactly what we are building toward with every childcare order.

What early learning settings need is straightforward: furniture that is safe for small bodies, easy to clean, built for outdoor use, and still looking right after a few years of daily use. Browse our kids tables range to see what we build for those settings.

How our kids picnic tables are built

Every kids table we make comes out of our Jimboomba workshop, handcrafted from the same quality timber we use across our full commercial range. We do not run a cheaper production line for kids furniture. The same care goes into a kids picnic table as a full-size commercial build.

Safety from the start

Every edge is fully sanded and rounded before a table leaves the workshop. No sharp corners, no rough joins, no exposed fittings. We use galvanised bolts and screws throughout, which keeps frames solid under constant daily use and means no rust or sharp edges developing over time.

For the Brisbane childcare project, every table was built with heavy-duty bracing and galvanised fittings specifically because childcare furniture needs to stay stable even when kids climb on it, lean on it, and shift around during group activities. That is the standard across all our commercial kids builds.

Timber that handles outdoor use

We build kids outdoor picnic tables from treated pine with a penetrating outdoor oil finish, which is what we used across the Brisbane project. For centres where tables will be permanently outside in tougher climates, we will always talk through the right timber and finish for your specific conditions.

With an annual re-oil, our tables hold up to Australian outdoor conditions for years, including Brisbane humidity, UV exposure, and regular cleaning.

Sized right for the age group

Adult-sized furniture does not work in early learning. For the Brisbane project, we supplied two configurations: toddler tables at 1200 x 590 x 580mm for under-3 groups, and standard preschool tables suited to ages 3 to 6. Both seat children at appropriate heights so they can sit comfortably, reach the table easily, and get on and off without help.

Custom sizing is available for any centre with specific requirements. We can also add umbrella holes, which several centres in the Brisbane rollout requested for their outdoor eating areas.

Kids picnic tables vs sensory tables: which one suits your centre?

We make two main types of kids outdoor furniture that work well in early learning settings, and they serve quite different purposes.

Kids picnic tables

Our kids standard picnic tables are the everyday workhorse for childcare outdoor areas. Snack time, lunch, craft activities, group time. They handle it all. Seat a small group comfortably, wipe down in seconds, and look right in any outdoor play area.

Available in treated pine or hardwood, with a range of finish options. Custom sizing available for larger group settings or specific space requirements.

Kids sensory tables

Our kids sensory tables are built for hands-on learning activities. Sand, water, loose parts, kinetic play. The kind of activities that early childhood educators know are essential for development, and that kids genuinely love.

The sensory table design includes a fitted tub and a solid timber frame built to handle the kind of daily use that comes with outdoor play in a childcare setting. If your centre is building out an outdoor learning environment, sensory tables alongside picnic tables give you a complete setup.

What to consider when ordering for a childcare or kindergarten setting

A few things worth thinking through before you get in touch:

  • How many children will use the table at once? We can size for small groups of four or larger settings of six to eight.
  • Will it be outdoors permanently or moved under cover? That shapes the timber and finish recommendation.
  • What age group is it for? Table and bench heights vary for toddlers versus preschool-age children.
  • Do you need custom branding or engraving? We offer laser engraving for centre logos or names, which works well for commercial settings.
  • Assembled or flatpack? Both options are available. Flatpack suits centres that are setting up multiple pieces at once or have tight access.

Happy to talk through the details before you commit to anything. Just get in touch and we will go from there.

Caring for timber kids furniture in a childcare setting

Childcare furniture gets cleaned frequently, which is exactly how it should be. Our timber tables are built to handle that. A few simple habits will keep them in good shape for years:

  • Wipe down with a damp cloth and mild soap after meals or messy activities. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip the timber finish.
  • Apply a protective timber oil or sealant once a year for outdoor tables. It takes about twenty minutes and makes a real difference to how long the table lasts.
  • Store under cover or bring indoors during extended periods of extreme weather if possible.
  • Check fittings occasionally and tighten if needed. With galvanised fittings this is rarely an issue, but it is worth a quick check once a year.

More detail on keeping timber furniture in good condition is on our care and maintenance page.

FAQs about kids picnic tables for childcare centres and schools

Are your kids picnic tables safe for childcare and kindergarten use?

Yes. Every table is fully sanded with rounded edges and smooth surfaces throughout. We use galvanised fittings to eliminate rust and sharp edges over time. Our kids tables are built for daily use in early learning environments and are suitable for children at childcare centres, kindergartens, and primary schools.

What sizes are available for kids picnic tables?

We build kids tables in a range of sizes to suit different age groups and group sizes, from small two-seater tables for toddlers through to larger group tables for preschool and school settings. Custom sizing is available. Get in touch with your requirements and we will come back with options.

Can you deliver kids picnic tables to childcare centres across Australia?

Yes. We deliver Australia-wide from our Jimboomba workshop in Queensland. Tables can be delivered fully assembled or as flatpack depending on your preference and site access. Contact us for a delivery quote to your location.

What is the difference between a kids picnic table and a sensory table?

A kids picnic table is designed for meals, craft, and group activities. A sensory table is built for hands-on play activities, sand, water, loose parts, with a fitted tub and a frame designed for that kind of use. Many childcare centres order both for their outdoor learning areas. See our full kids tables range for both options.

Can we get custom sizing or branding for our childcare centre?

Yes to both. We offer custom sizing for non-standard requirements and laser engraving for centre logos, names, or personalised details. Custom builds are a regular part of what we do. Request a quote and let us know what you need.

How long will a timber kids picnic table last outdoors?

With the right timber, proper finishing, and basic annual maintenance, a quality hardwood kids picnic table should last well over a decade in an outdoor childcare setting. We use treated timber and weather-resistant finishes as standard, and our care and maintenance guide walks through exactly what to do to keep it in good shape.
